This month, Danbury will participate in a nationwide tradition of observing April as Child Abuse
Prevention Month. Throughout the month, concerned citizens and organizations like Families Network
of Western CT, Inc. will host public awareness events and educational activities focused on drawing
attention to the urgent need to stop child abuse before it starts.
Be on the lookout for "Pinwheels for Prevention," the signature campaign of Prevent Child Abuse
America and its state chapters. Why pinwheels? Pinwheels are a happy and uplifting symbol of the
bright future all children deserve. They are the centerpiece of a growing movement committed to
stopping child abuse before it starts.
Families Network of Western CT, Inc, fully supports efforts to prevent child abuse by providing vital
support services to families in Danbury and the surrounding towns. To help raise awareness, pinwheels
will be on display at the Families Network offices and most especially at the Dr. Robert C. and Nancy Joy
Luncheon on Tuesday April 26th at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury.
The Luncheon is an important part of the vital work Families Network does to help prevent child abuse.
As part of Pinwheels for Progress and Volunteer Appreciation Week, we will be recognizing our
exceptional volunteers. Ken Essex will be named our 2022 recipient of the Jeannie C. Beck Above and
Beyond Award as the volunteer who demonstrates extraordinary effort, kindness and devotion to our
prevention efforts. Dr. Joan Magner will be presented with the Dr. Alvin Goldman Community Service
Award.
Now it's your turn to make a difference! Please consider taking action to prevent child abuse. A few
specific things you can do this month and throughout the year include planting a "Pinwheel Garden" in a
community gathering place, calling and writing your elected officials to ask them to support funding for
child abuse prevention, and being a friend to parents you know. In Danbury, you can become involved
in our child abuse prevention efforts by contacting us to plant your own Pinwheels for Prevention
Garden, joining us for the Luncheon on the 26th and by learning more about Families Network and our
efforts to prevent child abuse.
